At just 17 years old, Ty Smith is already carving out a place for himself as a compelling new voice in the red dirt country scene. With a maturity beyond his years and a gift for crafting emotionally resonant songs, Ty blends traditional influences with a distinct personal perspective, offering listeners music that is both rooted and refreshingly original.

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and raised in nearby Sand Springs, Ty grew up surrounded by music. His grandmother owned a pool hall that regularly hosted local and touring bands, exposing him early on to the energy of live performance and the power of storytelling through song. That environment planted the seeds of a passion that would grow into a full-time pursuit. A self-taught musician, Ty began playing drums at age four and taught himself guitar by 12, opening the door to songwriting, which quickly became his creative cornerstone.

Ty’s songs are known for their emotional depth, introspective lyrics, and thoughtful arrangements. Often described as “sad songs with a strong beat,” his music challenges assumptions about what young artists can express. Drawing influence from artists like Shane Smith and the Saints and American Aquarium, Ty explores universal themes of loss, longing, and resilience, demonstrating emotional insight and songwriting maturity that belies his age. As Saving Country Music put it: “This isn’t ‘tear in my beer’ country music full of timeless sentiments or trite clichés. This is ‘rip your heart out of your rib cage and stomp on it’ country.”

Outside of music, Ty competed for years in high-level billiards, a defining part of his story. Ranked among the top junior players in the country, he developed discipline and drive through thousands of hours at the table. When it came time to fund his first radio tour, he made the difficult decision to sell his prized pool table. That act of commitment, along with the support of his family, including his father, who left his job to tour with him — helped launch his career.

His breakout single, Rocky Mountain Pines, released at 14, was inspired by a rare bone condition that ended his baseball aspirations and kept him off his feet for nearly two years. The song reached the Top 40 on the country charts, with over 27,000 Spotify streams. Subsequent singles Wonderland and Words I Should’ve Said achieved Top 25 and Top 30 positions respectively, further establishing Ty as an artist to watch.

On stage, Ty delivers a live experience that is intentionally crafted and emotionally dynamic. He and his band have performed at venues including Cain’s Ballroom and Billy Bob’s, sharing stages with acts like Shane Smith and the Saints and the Teague Brothers Band.

With new music on the way and growing recognition — including 2024 nominations for TCMA and Josie Awards’ Young Artist of the Year — Ty Smith is not just a promising young talent: he is a serious artist with a clear voice, a strong vision, and a remarkable future ahead.
